Technology
C2CA has developed a system that upcycles end-of-life (EOL) concrete into drop-in materials for use in new concrete.
The innovation enables effective separation of the individual components of EOL concrete (aggregate, sand, and cement paste) through the combination of mechanical and thermal processes.
With this technology, 100% of the EOL concrete can be upcycled into new high-quality materials and no primary raw materials need to be mined. The technology removes a significant part of the hardened cement paste from the aggregates. This leads to aggregate with low water absorption. Thanks to this, our recycled aggregates and sand can fully replace their virgin counterparts in new concrete.
The ultra-fine cement paste particles can be used to produce low-carbon cementitious binders. As cement is the largest driver of CO2 emissions in concrete this will help significantly reduce the CO2 emissions from concrete.
Thanks to continuous quality control based on a LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) analysis, the aggregates are also of constant, documented quality. As a result, adjustments can be made on site if necessary, and the time-to-market of the high-quality circular raw materials for concrete is considerably shortened. Together with the use of the RFID tags the traceability of this quality is secured.
ADR
ADR technology is a mechanical system that uses kinetic energy for sorting the input crushed concrete waste (0–16 mm) into three product streams: the coarse aggregates (4–16 mm), the sand (1–4 mm), and the fine product (<1 mm).
HAS
The HAS technology is designed to further expose the fine fraction aggregates (0-4mm) into a hot gas (~500 °C) to remove the associated moisture, destroy undesirable CDW contaminants, and activate the recycled cement paste.
