CITADEL Project: Enabling High-Temperature Processes to Go Fully Electric
C2CA participates in the groundbreaking Horizon Europe project, CITADEL (substitution of fossil Combustion in Industrial high-Temperature processes by ADvanced ELectrical and plasma heating technologies), a major initiative aimed at greening energy-intensive industries. Under the leadership of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), C2CA, alongside a team of 14 research institutions and companies from seven European countries, is set to revolutionize the production landscape of refractory materials, glass, steel, copper, and, most notably, concrete upcycling. With a budget of 13.5 million euros from the European Union, the project kick-started in February 2024 and will create five demonstration plants over four years.
CITADEL’s mission resonates deeply with our ethos at C2CA Technologies B.V. As a startup dedicated to phasing out the use of virgin materials in concrete, we recognize the importance of exploring new technologies, taking risks, and constantly innovating to improve our solutions. Our involvement in CITADEL amplifies our commitment to sustainability and positions us at the forefront of technological advancements in our field.
For C2CA’s demo case within the project, we will develop an electric technology to facilitate the thermal cracking of waste concrete at temperatures between 500 and 700°C. This process is instrumental in separating sand and cement paste, and electrification is expected to lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions, superior energy efficiency, improved product quality, and enhanced process control.
Stay tuned for updates on our journey through CITADEL, as we endeavor to make a tangible impact on the environment with our technology.
